Residential Filox-R Filters

Filox-R™ filters for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide removal. Advanced high-performance units featuring Fleck control valves, Vortech advanced design mineral tanks, and Filox-R™ — the best iron/manganese/hydrogen sulfide treatment medium on the market.

Filox Filters comes in four sizes, designated by the filter tank dimensions: 9" X 48", 10" X 54", 12" X 52", and 13" X 54".

They're controlled by Fleck SXT valves, which gives the user much more control over settings than a standard timer.

All units in this series come standard with a 1" or 3/4" stainless steel bypass valve (your choice). This makes installation and service a snap. The bypass lets you easily divert water around the filter when filtered water isn't needed (for lawn watering, for example).

Why Filox?

Filox-R™ clearly outperforms the other filter media that are most commonly used for the reduction of iron, hydrogen sulfide and manganese. Here's why:

  • Manganese Dioxide Content: Filox-R™ is a superior performer because of its very high manganese dioxide content. Manganese dioxide is the active ingredient of all leading iron/manganese reduction systems. Filox-R™ consists of 75% to 85% manganese dioxide. By contrast, Manganese Greensand is 3% and Birm is 1% manganese dioxide. The high manganese dioxide content produces a much more active and energetic medium — and a much more effective product.

  • Service Flow Rate: Because of its superior performance potential, Filox supports a significantly higher service flow rate per bed size and can therefore be used in smaller filters than Birm or Greensand. In fact, an 8" diameter Filox filter actually exceeds the service flow capacity of a 10" diameter Birm or Greensand filter.

  • Media Lifespan: Filox-R™ has an expected lifespan that is 7500 times that of Birm. The life expectancy of Filox is essentially unlimited (except in extreme iron conditions), whereas Birm filters are commonly rebedded every two or three years.

  • Particle Strength: Filox-R™ has superior particle strength which makes it hold up better than other media during the frequent backwashing required of iron filters.

  • pH Tolerance: Filox-R™ operates within a much broader pH range than most iron-reduction media, and can be used to treat waters that are significantly lower in pH than Birm. The wider window of pH acceptability (5.0 to 9.0, according to the manufacturer, as compared with 6.8 and up for Birm), means that when using Filox it is often unnecessary to add pH amendment to an iron removal system. The wider pH range also makes it much easier to predict the success of an iron filter when the pH is in the mid-6 range.

  • Chlorine Tolerance: Unlike Birm, Filox-R™ is chlorine tolerant. In fact, it works well with all the standard oxidizing agents — chlorine, aeration, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, and ozone. An oxidizer helps to keep the media fresh and assure complete oxidation of iron and sulfide. Capacity increases greatly with the use of oxidizers as pretreatment.

(For an explanation of the oxidation/reduction/filtration involved in iron/manganese/hydrogen sulfide reduction, please see our AerMax page and reference pages that link from it.)

  • Single Tank: Although Filox works well with the standard oxidizers mentioned, Filox alone under the right conditions is capable of handling up to 15 ppm (parts per million) iron, 7 ppm hydrogen sulfide, and 3 ppm manganese.

Why Not Filox?

If Filox is so great, why doesn't everyone sell it?

Filox-R™ also has some disadvantages, mostly from the seller's viewpoint:

  • Weight: For one thing, it's very heavy. It weighs so much that it can only be packed in half cubic foot (57 lbs.) bags. For UPS shipping, Filox requires special boxing. Birm weighs less than half as much. Filter carbon, by contrast, weighs about 1/4 as much as Filox.

  • Media Cost: As compared with Birm and Greensand, Filox is very expensive. The wholesale price is almost triple that of Birm.

  • Backwash Requirement: Filox requires more frequent backwashing than most iron removal media. Except in very light use situations, daily backwashing is much preferred. Therefore, it uses more water and more wastewater disposal space (an important issue for homeowners with septic tanks).

  • Hardware Cost: Not only is Filox media itself more expensive to buy and more expensive to ship, but the hardware of the filters themselves tends to cost more. Because of the increased backwash requirement on large, high-flow filters, we use a control valve upgrade to the tough, free-flowing Fleck 2510 SXT. We also make the unit with the superior Vortech™ tank because of its increased backwash flow capability.

Residential Filox Filters We Offer

The backwashing Filox-R™ filters listed below cover service flow rates up to 11.5 gallons per minute. This is plenty for most residential users. We can supply larger filter upon request. Please call if you need a larger filter.

The filters below have in common:

  • All use Fleck control valves with SXT digital programming. They are proven performers, designed for simplicity and ease of operation, long service, flexibility and maximum user control. (Backwash and rinse times, for example, can be easily altered.) The valve comes pre-programmed. You need only to set the time of day and plug it in.

  • All filters come with a 1" bypass valve as standard equipment.

  • All filters come with a softener funnel for easy installation of the filter media.

  • All use the advanced Vortech™ mineral tank with superior flow properties. This tank requires no gravel underbedding with Filox.

  • All use pure NSF-Certified Filox-R™ and meet or exceed media load recommendations of the manufacturer.

  • All come with complete instructions and one-year guarantee on parts and workmanship. Tanks and control valve have extended warranties from their manufacturers.

Note: In the chart below, backwash requirement varies. Cold Water is defined as water less than 60 degrees fahrenheit. The higher the water temperature, the greater the backwash requirement. The Service Flow Rate is the maximum flow for optimal performance. (Water will go through the filter faster, but at higher rates performance declines.)

Maximum Service Flow: 6 gpm
Backwash Required: 7 gpm
