Silver is added to inhibit growth of bacteria. Good general-purpose carbon filter that can be used if bacterial growth within the carbon bed is a concern. (Silver impregnated carbon was much in vogue in the 1980s and 1990s due to aggressive marketing, but its popularity has declined.)
